What Is Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Surgery to reshape the nose is a common cosmetic procedure that can have profound results on a person’s appearance and self- confidence. Rhinoplasty can accomplish any number of tasks including nose augmentation or size reduction, narrowing of the nostrils, changing the bridge or tip of the nose, or an altering the angle of the nose and upper lip. Regardless of the specific purpose, rhinoplasty creates a better contoured and more proportionate nose.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

If you want to reshape the tip of your nose, straighten the bridge, or remove an unsightly hump, then you may be a good candidate for a rhinoplasty surgery. You may also undergo this procedure if you want to change the size of your nose to fit the proportions of your face better.
Teenagers may undergo nose jobs if their nasal tissues have reached maturity. That would be around the age of 16 for girls and a year later for boys.

Since this is an invasive procedure, it is of utmost importance that you are in good overall health without underlying vascular conditions. Non-smokers are ideal.

Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

In order to properly develop the best treatment approach for your specific needs, your consultation at Plastic Surgery Institute of Dayton will involve a physical examination. An in-depth medical history review will be conducted to determine risk factors. You will be asked about underlying conditions and current medications.
If you are a smoker, you may be given pre-surgery instructions and will be directed to quit weeks before the procedure. Photographs may be taken from different angles for comparison purposes.

The Procedure

Anesthesia will be administered to prevent discomfort during the rhinoplasty procedure. The patient may be given general anesthesia.

Next, small incisions will be made inside the nostrils or across the base of the nose, between the nostrils. This depends on the difficulty of the adjustments needed to achieve the desired outcome.
Bone, soft tissue, and cartilage may be sculpted, removed, or added to reshape the nose. Then, the incisions will be stitched closed. A nasal splint may be placed inside the nose, and bandages may be applied to the outside of the nose to facilitate faster healing.

The Recovery Period

After your rhinoplasty surgery, downtime will be needed for your recovery. You will be instructed to keep your head elevated for the next 24 hours or longer. Bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes may be experienced and should disappear after a week.

If you wear glasses, avoid resting them on your nose. You may get back to your daily routines after two or three weeks. You are recommended to avoid strenuous exercises for three to six months following your nose job. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to check on the healing and structure of your nose.

Rhinoplasty Cost

Due to the personalized approach of rhinoplasty surgery, the cost varies from one patient to another. The overall price will be impacted by anesthetic and surgical fees, along with the techniques used.
