A mommy makeover is one of the most popular combinations of plastic-surgery procedures. It is explicitly designed to address the aesthetic issues faced by women who have been through pregnancy, breastfeeding, and childbirth.
A mommy makeover has one set goal: to restore the appearance of a woman’s body after childbirth. Naturally, there are a lot of changes that occur during and after pregnancy. The chest and abdomen are two areas that experience a number of major changes with motherhood.
Which Procedures Can Be Included in a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is generally performed during a single surgical session. It is comprised of a combination of two or more plastic-surgery procedures. A mommy makeover can include a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, a breast lift, a breast reduction, and liposuction.
During pregnancy, a woman’s abdominal muscles and skin stretch to accommodate her growing baby. This affects the appearance of the abdomen, and after the baby is born, women find it difficult to regain their stomach’s natural appearance.
A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, removes excess sagging skin and fat. It also tightens the abdominal muscles and restores the strength of the abdominal wall. This helps to achieve a fit and contoured abdomen. In some cases, this procedure can also remove stretch marks.
Breast Augmentation, Lift, and Reduction
Generally, pregnancy causes a woman’s breasts to increase in size. After pregnancy and lactation, the breasts are no longer firm and perky and have begun to sag. A breast lift raises sagging breasts for a perkier look.
Breasts can also lose volume after breastfeeding. Breast augmentation restores the volume and projection of the breasts using prosthetic implants.
A breast reduction is also an option after pregnancy for women whose breasts have retained their larger size and no longer naturally fit the proportions of their body.
Women who find it difficult to lose excess fat after pregnancy usually choose liposuction in their mommy makeover. This procedure removes fat using medical suction. It focuses on the fat that is present in areas like the abdomen, back, thighs, and buttocks.
The Mommy-Makeover Process
It is essential that these procedures be performed in an accredited operating facility. A nursing facility should be available in the proximity to allow supervised recovery for at least 24 hours post-operatively to monitor and ensure safety.
It should take about five hours to complete the surgery, depending on the procedures that are included. Sometimes, the procedure may be performed in two stages that are spaced three to six months apart to ensure that there’s time for wound healing and recovery.
These procedures are ideally done when a previously pregnant woman has gone through a significant amount of weight loss. It is vital that her body has recovered entirely from childbearing and nursing before performing the surgery. She should ideally be within a few pounds of a healthy body mass index.
